Iona Reflections

It has been a real privilege to step away for this unique retreat in Scotland. As the only clergy among this group of 18, I have had the joy and responsibility of celebrating Holy Communion each day. On some occasions, visitors have also joined us.

Over the past five days, we have reflected on themes such as martyrdom, the life of St Columba, silence, God’s creation, and the Celtic notion of “thin places.” Each reflection is followed by walks or hikes, where we prayerfully observe and internalise these themes. On some days, we have kept extended periods of silence.

It is spring, yet still very cold! Temperatures often dip below 10°C, especially when the winds pick up. Needless to say, the landscape is stunning— both beautiful and deeply inspiring. We are staying at Bishop’s House, where the rooms are warm and comfortable, and the Western meals have been especially welcome in this weather.

We have also been attending daily services at Iona Abbey (photo to the right)—an ancient and sacred place where ecumenical worship continues to this day. It is truly awe-inspiring to worship in such a hallowed space. The Abbey is home to the Iona Community, which gathers Christians from around the world. Among them is the Scottish hymn writer John Bell, known for “The Summons” (“Will you come and follow Me”), a hymn we occasionally sing at MPCC.

God willing, I hope that such retreats can be organised for MPCC members in the future. While holidays are refreshing, a pilgrimage adds a deeper spiritual dimension. It can be, for many, a life-changing experience. I will share more when I return. In the meantime, do enjoy the photos. And yes, a blessed Mother’s Day to all!
