We're embarking on a new series exploring the Book of James. Known for its practical advice and straightforward language, this letter is a treasure trove of wisdom.
While many compare James to the Book of Proverbs, it's more than a collection of wise sayings. It delves into theological concepts and presents arguments, making it a rich source for in-depth study. Our sermons will focus on these passages, exploring the deeper meaning behind the text.
However, there are statements and one-liners in James which are memorable. In fact, these "minor" verses do shape our theological thinking. Consider these examples from chapter one alone:
"Count it all joy when various trials..."
"Faith without works is dead."
"Be doers of the Word and not hearers only..."
"Religion that is pure ... is this: to visit orphans and widows ..."
In our years as a Christian, these verses will speak to us again and again as a joyful - and sometimes nagging - reminder. We can imagine that these simple one liners will continue to be remembered even if we are mentally diminished by illness or old age.
That's right. Truth often transformed us through their simplest proverbial form. A small seed of top of the line old tree Mau Shan Wang durian, can explode into complex flavours in the mouth, causing tears of joy (or anguish for the unfortunate few). Likewise, these wise one-liners can be unpacked in countless and complex ways to guide and keep us wise as we traverse through life.
Do you want to be richly blessed by this series from James? To fully appreciate this series, we encourage you to:
Read every verse carefully.
Listen attentively to the messages.
Meditate on the truths presented.
Discuss the verses with others in your community.
Reflect on how you can apply the teachings to your daily life.
I know there is the other 65 books of Scripture to master, some which dwarfs James in size. For this season, if you can focus and let the message of James take hold of your life - to be doers and not just hearers - that will be taking a great stride in your spiritual journey.
