Last Friday, pastors and leaders from several churches in the Marine Parade area met with Mr Goh Pei Ming, MP for Marine Parade, and Mr Seah Kian Peng, head of the Marine Parade–Braddell Heights GRC and Speaker of Parliament. Churches represented included Charis MethodistToong Chai PresbyterianKatong PresbyterianBethesda KatongSt Hilda’s, and MPCC.

Mr Goh shared updates on upcoming developments in the Marine Parade area. The new Marine Parade Community Centre (photo on the right) is expected to be completed by early next year, and the Joo Chiat area will see continue upgrading and gentrification. In light of these changes, he invited churches to be actively involved in engaging the community—from outreach events to participation in heritage and enrichment initiatives.

An interesting moment in the discussion was the call for more Pickleball courts (!)—a reminder of the importance of recreational and intergenerational activities. Mr Seah also encouraged churches to consider opening up their premises to facilitate sports programmes, active ageing centres, and other community-based outreach efforts.

There was also a shared burden for troubled youths. Both MPs recognised the role that churches and welfare organisations can play in youth mentoring and rehabilitation, and expressed their support for continued partnership in these areas.

We were encouraged to hear about churches in the area working together to host Christmas events for the community. A notable plan on the horizon is the proposal for a wider pedestrian walkway along East Coast Road. One can imagine a future "Celebrate Christmas @ Katong" taking place right there—bringing festive joy and Christian witness to the heart of our neighbourhood.

Looking ahead, on 20 December, MPCC will be supporting the Christmas Carnival hosted by Charis Methodist Church. We’ve been invited to contribute by organising seminars (e.g. on hydroponicscooking, or health) and possibly managing one or two food stalls. Then in 2026, as we celebrate MPCC’s 50th Anniversary, we will be the ones hosting the Christmas Carnival for the community.

Clearly, there are many exciting opportunities for inter-church collaboration as we seek to reach and enrich our shared community. As Marine Parade and Joo Chiat continue to evolve, we must stay attuned to the changing demographics and needs—so that our outreach remains relevant, meaningful, and faithful to Christ’s call. Let us pray that MPCC will work well with other churches and our MP to strengthen her connection with our neighbouring community.
